What F31 means

Current Frigidaire electric ranges and cooktops, such as the FFEF3054TS and FPEF3077QF, and freestanding ranges built since about 2004, show F31 when the oven sensor circuit reads shorted. The RTD sensor normally has a resistance the control expects, and when it drops below roughly 500 ohms, or 800 ohms on an ES 510 control, the control treats the circuit as shorted. The oven may stop heating or turn itself off mid-cycle.

Common causes of F31

  • The oven temperature sensor, which can short internally
  • Wiring that has chafed against the oven wall
  • The control reading the sensor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Let the oven cool all the way down. 2. Take the range off power at the breaker or outlet for up to 30 seconds, then reconnect it. 3. Start a bake and see whether F31 returns. 4. Leave the sensor where it is.

! Why to stop there
  • F31 is the mirror of F30, a short rather than an open, and the two need different tests.
  • We measure the sensor with the range unpowered and compare it with what the control expects.
  • You get a written price first, and a plain answer on whether an older range merits the repair.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F31F31 questions
What separates F31 from F30?

F30 means the sensor circuit is open, and F31 means it is shorted. The cause can be the same probe or its wiring, but we test each case properly instead of assuming.

Can I keep using the oven with F31?

We would hold off. The control cannot read the temperature correctly, so the oven may not heat or may shut off partway through. A reset can sometimes clear it for a short while.

Will you tell me if the repair is not worth it?

Yes. Before we start, we tell you plainly if the age of the range makes the repair a poor value, so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.
