What F20 means
On Frigidaire freestanding gas and electric ranges built since about 2004, such as the PLEF398DC and GLEF378DS, F20 means the oven control has lost communication with the electronic surface element control, the ESEC. The link is a harness between two plugs on the boards. On current ranges, F3, F20 and F26 are grouped together as communication errors. You may find the surface elements do not respond to their knobs, or the display shows F20 at startup.
Common causes of F20
- The harness between the oven control and the surface element control
- The connectors at each board
- The surface element control board
- The oven control
1. Turn off every element and the oven. 2. Trip the range's breaker or unplug it for up to 30 seconds, then switch it back on. 3. Try one surface element and watch whether F20 comes back. 4. Leave the back panel where it is.
- F20 tells us the two boards are not talking, not which one stopped.
- We test the harness and connectors, then each board's supply and output.
- The written price comes first, and an older range gets an honest answer about whether a new board is worth it.
Other Range codes
What is the ESEC?
It is the electronic surface element control that runs the burners on these electric ranges. F20 means the oven control can no longer talk to it, so the knobs cannot set the burners properly.
Will the oven still work with F20?
It may, since the oven and the surface control are separate systems, but the surface elements usually will not. We would not rely on a range that is showing a communication code until it has been checked.
Can cutting the power clear F20?
It can, if the break in communication was a one-time glitch. If F20 returns, the link or one of the boards still needs testing, and a repeat code tells us where to start.
Still seeing F20?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
