What E55 means
On the Frigidaire and Gallery 3.0 cu ft front-load washers of roughly 2004 to 2006, E55 means the motor is overheating. The washer stops the motor when it gets too hot, and the cycle halts. On the lower-tier models without a display, the same condition is shown as light flashes instead of a printed code. E55 appears in that early chart only, so it does not apply to the later Affinity washers. Owners usually see it after a long run, a heavy load or repeated back-to-back loads.
Common causes of E55
- Motor running hot after a heavy or repeated load
- Drum or load binding so the motor works harder
- Motor protection circuit reading hot
- Control reading of motor temperature
1. Turn the washer off and let the motor cool for 30 minutes. 2. Take out part of the load and make sure nothing is jammed between the drum and the tub. 3. Restart with a smaller load. 4. If E55 comes back quickly, stop using the washer and book a visit.
- If the motor cools and E55 returns soon after, we do not know whether the motor, a drag in the drum or the temperature circuit is the cause.
- We check how freely the drum turns and how the motor behaves under load, then give you a written price.
- These washers are older, and we tell you straight whether a repair makes sense.

Is it safe to wait and try again?
Yes. Give the motor 30 minutes to cool, then try a smaller load. If it overheats again soon, it needs a look rather than repeated restarts.
Does my washer show E55 with lights instead?
Some Good-line models without a display show codes by flashing the indicator lights, with the Start light giving the second digit. We can read that pattern when we visit.
Could a heavy load cause E55?
It can. A heavy load makes the motor work harder and heat up. If E55 shows up on ordinary loads, we check the drum and the motor.
Still seeing E55?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
