What E31 means
Frigidaire front-load washers built around the horizontal-axis electronic control show E31 when the pressure sensor is not communicating with the control board. The pressure sensor tells the washer how much water is in the tub. Without it, the control cannot fill or drain correctly. The code appears on the 3.0 cubic foot Frigidaire and Gallery washers from about 2004 to 2006 on the Better models, the Affinity 6000 and 7000 Series from 2006, and the 3.5 cubic foot Affinity from 2009 to 2012. You may see a stalled cycle or a tub that fills or drains oddly.
Common causes of E31
- The pressure sensor
- The tube or hose between the tub and the sensor
- The wiring between the sensor and the control board
- The board input that listens to the sensor
1. Switch the washer off at the outlet for a few minutes, then restore power. 2. Check that nothing is leaking at the tub. 3. Leave the door shut while there is water in the drum. 4. Tell us what the display shows when you call.
- The code does not show whether the sensor, its wiring or the board is involved.
- We test the sensor and the connector and look at the air tube.
- You see the price on paper before a sensor or board is replaced.

What does the pressure sensor do?
It senses the water level in the tub through air pressure and tells the control when to stop filling or start draining. Without it, the washer cannot judge water level.
Why does the washer behave oddly with E31?
Without a level signal, the control cannot fill and drain properly. It may stop, overfill or drain early. It tells the control when to stop filling and when to drain, so a missing signal affects both.
Is a sensor repair worth it on an older washer?
Often yes, since the sensor is a modest part. We test first, write the price down, and tell you straight if the washer is not worth the money.
Still seeing E31?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
