What F2 means
F2 on a Frigidaire room air conditioner with a digital display also reports freeze protection, and the unit is waiting for the coil to thaw. While F2 shows, cooling is paused so any ice on the coil can melt. After a short rest the unit can usually restart, but if F2 appears again and again it points to something that keeps the coil too cold, such as poor airflow or a sensor misreading.
Common causes of F2
- A dirty filter or blocked intake limiting airflow
- The coil sensor reporting a colder reading than is real
- Operating the unit in a cool room
1. Turn the unit off and let it defrost for at least 5 minutes. 2. Clean the air filter and clear the intake and vents. 3. Unplug the unit briefly, plug it back in and restart it. 4. If F2 comes back, schedule service.
- If F2 returns after the unit has defrosted, the cause is still there, and a reset will not remove it.
- We check airflow, the coil sensor and the control, in that order.
- You will see the written price before any repair, and we will say plainly if the unit is not worth fixing.

How long should I wait with F2 on the display?
Give the unit about five minutes off so the coil can defrost, then restart it. If it runs normally, clean the filter. If F2 shows again soon after, have it checked.
What is the difference between F1 and F2?
Both relate to freeze protection. F1 reports that protection has engaged, while F2 is the defrost-wait message. We treat them the same way: find out why the coil gets too cold.
Can I use the unit in a cool room?
Room air conditioners are built for warm rooms. In cool conditions the coil can ice up more easily, which may trigger F2. If the room is warm and F2 still appears, we should look at it.
Still seeing F2?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
