What AS means
Frigidaire window, wall and portable room air conditioners with a digital display show AS when the control cannot get a usable reading from the room temperature thermistor, the small sensor that tells the unit how warm the air in the room is. Without that reading the unit cannot judge when to start or stop cooling. You will usually see AS on the display and the unit may run oddly or not cool as expected. Many of these units are several summers old and are still worth repairing.
Common causes of AS
- The room temperature thermistor or its plug connection
- The wiring between the sensor and the main control board
- The input circuit on the main control board that reads the sensor
1. Unplug the air conditioner and wait about 30 seconds. 2. Plug it back in and turn it on. 3. Make sure nothing blocks the air intake, such as a curtain or furniture. 4. If AS returns, stop using the unit and schedule a visit.
- A power reset only tells you whether the sensor reading was a one-time glitch; it does not tell us if the sensor is open or the board input is bad.
- We check the sensor and its connection first, then the board, so you are not asked to pay for a board when a plug is the cause.
- If the unit is old and the repair would cost more than it is worth, we will tell you so before any work starts.
Other Room Air Conditioner codes
Is AS the same as the unit being too warm to cool?
No. AS is a sensor message, not a room-temperature warning. The unit has lost its reading of the room air. Cooling may be poor or erratic as a result, but the cause is the sensor path, not the room.
Will unplugging the unit fix it?
Sometimes. A 30-second power reset clears a one-time glitch. If AS comes back, the sensor or the circuit that reads it is the likely cause and needs to be tested.
Do you repair older window and portable units?
Yes, we repair many older room air conditioners. We give you the written price before work starts and we will say plainly if a repair does not make sense for the age of your unit.
Still seeing AS?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
