What P1 means
P1 on a Frigidaire room air conditioner with a digital display means the bottom drain tray is full of condensate. Window, wall and portable models can all show it. The unit stops cooling until the water is drained, to avoid overflow. It is common at the first start of the season, when the tray still holds water from last year. The code is about water level, not about a failed part.
Common causes of P1
- Water collected in the bottom tray
- A blocked or closed drain path
- A unit tilted away from its drain
1. Turn the unit off and unplug it. 2. Move it to a spot where water can drain, such as a floor drain or a pan. 3. Remove the bottom drain plug and let the water out, tilting the unit gently if needed. 4. Replace the plug, plug the unit in and restart it.
- If P1 comes back quickly after draining, something is adding too much water or the drain path is blocked.
- If the level switch is stuck, the unit may report a full tray when it is not full; we test that.
- We check for leaks and tilt before suggesting any repair.
Other Room Air Conditioner codes
Why does my air conditioner say P1?
The bottom tray has filled with water from the air the unit removes. When it is full, the unit pauses cooling so water does not overflow into your home.
Do I have to drain it every time?
Not usually. In many climates the water evaporates. In humid Houston weather the tray may fill faster, so some owners need to drain it more often or use the drain connection.
Is a full tray at the start of the season normal?
Yes. Water left over from last year can trigger P1 at the first start. Drain it, restart, and call us only if P1 returns soon after.
Still unsure about P1?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
