What HS means
On Frigidaire room air conditioners with a digital display, HS reports that the thermistor reading the temperature of the air leaving the unit is not working. The control uses that reading to manage the unit. On older heat and cool models, the same HS code points to the heater thermistor instead, so the exact sensor depends on the generation. You will see HS on the display and the unit may stop or run poorly.
Common causes of HS
- The discharge air or heater thermistor and its plug
- The wiring from the sensor to the control board
- The board circuit that reads the sensor
1. Unplug the unit and wait about 30 seconds. 2. Plug it back in and run it. 3. Make sure the vents and intake are clear. 4. If HS is still on the display, stop using the unit and schedule service. 5. Note whether the unit was heating or cooling when the code appeared.
- HS has two possible meanings by generation, so we confirm which sensor your unit actually has before testing.
- A reset does not tell us whether the sensor, wiring or board is the cause.
- We give a written price first and say plainly when an older unit is not worth the repair.
Other Room Air Conditioner codes
What does HS mean?
HS means a temperature sensor in the air path has failed. On most current units it is the discharge air sensor. On older heat and cool units it is the heater sensor.
Will the unit still cool with HS?
It may run, but not reliably. The control depends on that reading, so many units limit operation or shut off. We recommend having it checked before relying on it.
Is my older heat and cool unit worth fixing?
Often it is, since sensors are usually inexpensive to test and replace. We give you the written price and will tell you honestly if the repair is not worth it.
Still seeing HS?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
