What ES means
Frigidaire room air conditioners with a digital display, in window, wall and portable styles, show ES when the control loses the reading from the indoor coil temperature sensor, which is sometimes called the evaporator or pipe sensor. On some models the same code covers the humidity sensor. The unit uses that reading to protect the coil from freezing, so with ES you may see poor cooling or the unit shutting itself off.
Common causes of ES
- The coil temperature sensor or its plug
- The wire run from the sensor to the board
- The control board input that reads the sensor
1. Unplug the unit and wait about 30 seconds. 2. Plug it back in and start a cooling cycle. 3. Clean the air filter and keep the intake clear. 4. If ES shows up again, turn the unit off and schedule a repair.
- A reset only shows whether the reading was a brief glitch; it cannot tell us whether the sensor, wiring or board is the issue.
- We test the sensor and its connection before looking at the board.
- You will get the written price first, and an honest opinion if the unit is too old to justify the repair.
Other Room Air Conditioner codes
What is the ES code on my air conditioner?
ES means the unit lost the reading from its indoor coil sensor, or on some models the humidity sensor. The control uses that sensor to protect the coil, so it may limit or stop cooling.
Can a dirty filter cause ES?
A dirty filter can make the coil too cold, but ES itself means the sensor reading is missing. Cleaning the filter is still a good first step, and then we check the sensor if the code returns.
Should I keep running the unit?
We recommend not running it with ES showing. Without a good coil reading the unit cannot protect itself properly, so have the sensor checked first.
Still seeing ES?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
