What E4A means
E4A is a program time-out on Frigidaire Affinity and Gallery 5.8 cubic foot electronic-control dryers, along with the older 5.75 cubic foot Good and Better models. It means the drying time has gone past the program time for that cycle. The 2006 Affinity owner chart pairs it with four beeps and describes the dryer as running too long. In plain terms the dryer is not drying the load in the time it expects. The owner chart lists a blocked lint filter, a clogged vent system and an overloaded drum. These older dryers are still in many homes.
Common causes of E4A
- A lint screen blocked by softener-sheet residue
- A clogged vent line or outside vent hood
- A drum loaded beyond its size
- Weak heating or airflow if the vent is clear
1. Remove the lint and wash the lint screen with warm soapy water to clear softener-sheet residue. 2. Clean the vent line and the outside vent hood. 3. Reduce the load size. 4. Press Cancel and run a fresh cycle. 5. If E4A comes back with a clean vent, call us to schedule service.
- A clean screen and vent solve most of these, so when E4A returns after those checks the cause is usually airflow we can not see or weak heating.
- We measure how well the dryer moves air and heats before we recommend any part.
- We tell you plainly if an older dryer is not worth repairing.

Why does my dryer run too long?
Usually the air is not leaving the dryer. A lint screen with softener residue, a clogged vent or a big load slows drying until the program time runs out. A lint screen that looks clean can still be coated with a film from fabric softener sheets.
Is E4A the same as four beeps?
Yes. On the 2006 Affinity chart four beeps and E4A are the same condition. Washing it in warm soapy water removes that film and often restores airflow.
Will cleaning the vent fix E4A?
Often it does. If E4A returns after the lint screen and vent are clean, we check airflow and heating. If the vent run is long or has many bends, we can check it.
