What E5B means

E5B is a heater error on Frigidaire Affinity and Gallery 5.8 cubic foot electronic-control dryers, along with the older 5.75 cubic foot Good and Better models. The control watches its thermistor, and E5B appears when the temperature reading has not changed in a certain amount of time. The older charts simply say no heat. The dryer tumbles but the clothes stay cool and damp, or the cycle stops. On Gallery units that have no readout, the lights blink the code instead. These older dryers are still in many homes, and we repair them.

Common causes of E5B

  • The heating element or its supply
  • Thermal fuse or thermostat in the heater circuit
  • The control thermistor reading
  • The wiring or board relay that powers the heater
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Clean the lint screen and check the outside vent hood. 2. Make sure the dryer is plugged in firmly and the breaker for the dryer has not tripped. 3. Run a short cycle and feel for warm air at the vent. 4. If E5B returns, stop using the dryer and call us to schedule service.

! Why to stop there
  • A temperature that does not change can come from the element, a safety part, the sensor or the board, and the screen and vent checks cannot tell those apart.
  • We test the heater circuit step by step so we replace the right part.
  • We tell you plainly when an older dryer is not worth the repair.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E5BE5B questions
Does E5B always mean the heating element is bad?

No. It means the temperature did not change, which can come from the element, a safety part, the sensor or the control. We test them in order. Because the temperature reading did not change, the cause can be a heater, a safety part, the sensor or the board.

Why does the dryer tumble but not heat?

The motor and the heater run on separate circuits. The drum can spin while the heater circuit is not working. We work through those in order rather than replace the part most often blamed.

Is it worth fixing an older dryer with no heat?

Often yes. We give a written price first and say honestly when a repair does not make sense. The checks you can do first are the screen, the vent and the breaker.
