What E8C means
E8C means the safety thermostat, also called the high limit thermostat, has tripped too many times within a certain period of the program on Frigidaire Affinity and Gallery 5.8 cubic foot electronic-control dryers, along with the older 5.75 cubic foot Good and Better models. A dryer that overheats this often usually has restricted airflow. The manual points to a blocked lint filter or exhaust, air leaks in the duct, blower blades, drum seals and a closet with a solid door. These are older dryers still in many homes, and overheating is worth taking seriously.
Common causes of E8C
- A blocked lint screen or exhaust vent
- Duct leaks or a kinked vent line
- Blower wheel or drum seals that restrict airflow
- A closet door with no air supply for the dryer
1. Stop the dryer and let it cool. 2. Clean the lint screen and check the outside vent hood. 3. Check that the vent line behind the dryer is not crushed or kinked. 4. If the dryer sits in a closet, open the door fully. 5. Call us to schedule service if E8C returns.
- A clear screen does not rule out a blocked line, a worn blower or weak seals, and these can cause repeated overheating.
- We check the airflow path and the safety thermostat before the dryer is used again.
- If an older dryer is not worth the repair, we will say so before work starts.

Is E8C a safety concern?
It can be. A dryer that keeps overheating needs its airflow checked, and a clogged vent is also a fire risk. Stop using it until it is checked. The safety thermostat is doing its job when it trips.
Why does a closet matter?
A dryer needs air to come in as well as go out. A solid closet door can starve it and raise the temperature. Replacing it without fixing airflow only hides the cause.
Can the thermostat just be replaced?
It may need replacing, but if airflow is the reason it tripped, the new one will trip again. We fix the cause first. A blocked vent also raises the risk of fire, so we treat E8C seriously.
