What E74 means
E74 on a Frigidaire Affinity 6000 or 7000 front-load washer means the wash temperature does not increase. The washer called for warm or hot water, and the temperature stayed flat while the control waited. This code appears in the Affinity charts of the 2006 and 2009 to 2012 washers, not on the earlier 3.0 cu ft design. Owners notice that a warm or sanitary wash is slow, the cycle stalls or E74 appears partway through, while cold washes run fine.
Common causes of E74
- Heating element not warming the water
- Water temperature sensor reading wrong
- Hot water supply to the washer
- Heater relay or wiring on the control
1. Check that the hot water hose is connected and the hot faucet is fully open. 2. Make sure the water heater in the home is providing hot water to that tap. 3. Try a cold cycle to see if the washer otherwise runs. 4. If E74 returns, call us for a heater check.
- E74 says the water did not warm, which could be the element, the sensor or the supply.
- We check the supply first, then the heater and its sensor, and give you a written price before any repair.
- Affinity washers are older, so we say plainly if the repair is not worth it.
Other Washer codes
Does E74 mean my water heater is bad?
Not necessarily. We check the hot supply to the washer first. If hot water arrives and the code still shows, the heater or sensor is next.
Can I run cold cycles?
Often yes. Cold washes do not depend on the heater. If E74 stops everything, the washer needs a visit. Cold wash cycles do not need the heater, so many owners keep washing that way until we can test it.
Is E74 on older 3.0 cu ft washers too?
It is listed only for the Affinity generations. The older charts use other codes for water temperature. Those older washers use different codes for water temperature, so we read the code shown and test the right circuit.
Still seeing E74?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
