What E5 means
E5 on a Frigidaire top-load washer with a digital display means the washer is not level. It is one of the few codes that points at the floor and the legs rather than at a part inside the cabinet. The washer senses that it is leaning, often backward, and stops so it does not shake itself across the room. Owners see E5 appear during the spin, or right after a heavy load shifts. This is a current electronic top-loader, so it is common on washers set on a slab with a slight slope.
Common causes of E5
- Leveling legs set at different heights
- Washer leaning back on an uneven floor
- A heavily unbalanced load pulling the tub off center
1. Turn the washer off and check that all four feet sit firmly on the floor. 2. Make sure the washer is level and not leaned back, then adjust the leveling legs as needed. 3. Push down on each top corner. The washer should not rock. 4. Restart with a smaller, evenly mixed load.
- If E5 returns on a washer that is clearly level, we do not yet know whether the level sensing or the control is reading wrong.
- We check how the washer sits, the suspension and the load sensing, then give you a written price before any repair.
- If the floor is the real cause, we tell you that instead of replacing parts.
Other Washer codes
Is E5 a serious problem?
Usually not. E5 means the washer sensed it is not level. Adjusting the legs fixes it on most machines. If it persists after leveling, we check the sensing and the suspension.
How level does the washer need to be?
It should not rock when you push on any corner, and a level on the lid should read flat in both directions. A washer that walks during the spin is a sign the legs need another adjustment.
Why does E5 only show up on big loads?
A heavy or lopsided load pushes the tub off center and can make a borderline floor tilt show itself. Level legs and smaller, mixed loads help. If it still happens, we look at the suspension.
Still unsure about E5?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
