What S or E8 means
S or E8 on Frigidaire upright freezers with electronic control, including the Deluxe half-moon, vertical, square and rectangle control boards, such as FPUH19D7LF, means the thermistor is shorted. The control reads the temperature sensor circuit as if the two wires were touching, so it cannot read the real temperature. The freezer may run too long or not enough. Plenty of these upright freezers are still in daily use, and we repair them.
Common causes of S or E8
- The thermistor itself
- Pinched or damaged sensor wiring
- A moisture-damaged plug
- The control board input
1. Make sure the plug is seated and the door shuts tightly. 2. Give the freezer a minute without power, then restore it. 3. Look at how cold the inside feels after a few hours. 4. If S or E8 returns, protect the food and call us to schedule service.
- A shorted reading can come from the sensor, the wiring or the board, and it cannot be told apart from outside the freezer.
- We test the thermistor and its wiring before we suggest the board.
- We tell you plainly if the freezer is old enough that repairing it does not make sense.
Other Freezer codes
Is S the same as E8?
Yes. On these freezers the letter S and the code E8 both mean a shorted thermistor. A shorted reading can come from a damaged wire or a wet plug.
Will the freezer keep my food frozen with E8?
It may, but the control cannot read the real temperature. Check that it is staying cold and move food if it warms. The sensor itself is the next check.
Do you repair this kind of freezer?
Yes. We repair older upright freezers and give a written price before we start. The board comes last. Tell us how long the code has been showing, and whether the freezer felt colder or warmer than usual around that time.
Still seeing S or E8?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
