What E or E1 means
A single E or E1 on Frigidaire upright freezers with electronic control, including the Deluxe half-moon, vertical, square and rectangle control boards is a thermistor error. The thermistor is the temperature sensor inside the freezer, and the control uses it to decide when to run the compressor. When the control cannot read it correctly, you see E or E1 and the freezer may run too long, too little or not as set. These upright freezers are older models still in many homes, and we repair them.
Common causes of E or E1
- The thermistor and its plug
- The wiring between the thermistor and the control
- The main control board input that reads the sensor
1. Check that the freezer is plugged in and the door is closed. 2. Turn the freezer off at the plug for about a minute, then restore power. 3. Feel the inside after a few hours to see whether it is staying cold. 4. If E or E1 returns, move food that could spoil and call us to schedule service.
- The code names the sensor circuit but not whether the sensor, plug or board is the cause.
- We test the thermistor and its connection before we recommend the board.
- Our price is given in writing before work, and an older freezer that is not worth the repair gets an honest answer from us.
Other Freezer codes
What does E or E1 mean on my freezer?
It is a thermistor error. The control cannot read the temperature sensor properly, so it cannot hold the freezer at the set temperature with confidence. The thermistor is a small sensor, and the repair is often straightforward.
Is the freezer still cooling with E1 showing?
It may be, but it can cool too much or too little. Check the temperature inside and protect the food. The check starts with its plug and wiring.
Can an older freezer be repaired for this?
Often yes, since a sensor repair is usually modest. We say plainly when it is not worth it. The control board is the last thing we replace.
Still seeing E or E1?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
