Frigidaire EFIC189 Ice Maker Repair

Frigidaire ice maker

Most common issues on this model

  1. Water ending up in the basket instead of ice
  2. A unit that shuts off partway through a cycle
  3. Leaking around the reservoir
  4. No ice after several full cycles

The EFIC189 is a Frigidaire countertop ice maker that makes bullet-shaped ice, about 26 lb per day. It comes with a removable basket and scoop and uses indicator lights to show what the unit is doing. Colors are sold with a suffix, for example silver, so your label may read slightly longer than the base number.

These units are common on kitchen counters, in offices and in outdoor kitchens where there is no built-in ice maker. When one stops making ice, we start with the water path: reservoir, pump and the tray fill. Water collecting in the basket means the ice is melting or never forming, so we check the cooling side next and the drain at the bottom of the basket. A leak near the reservoir sends us to the seals and the fill connection.

Many of these have been on a counter for years, and if a repair does not make financial sense, we will say it. Parts are ordered only after the label confirms the exact model and serial and you have approved the written quote. Our labor is warranted for 30 days.

EFIC189EFIC189 questions
Why is there water in the basket of my EFIC189 instead of ice?

Some melting in the basket is normal for this style of machine. A pool of water, though, means ice is not staying frozen. We check the drain path, then the cooling side, to see if the tray freezes at all.

What can make a countertop ice maker shut off in the middle of a cycle?

An ice-full reading, a low water reading or an overheating cooling side can each end a cycle early. We test the level sensing and where the basket sits, then measure how the cooling parts behave during a run.

My unit leaks at the reservoir. Is that fixable?

Often, yes. We examine the seal, the pump connection and the tank itself for cracks. A cracked tank usually means a new reservoir, and the cost is written out for you before we order.
