Often yes, but it depends on what failed, not just the age. A fifteen-year-old Frigidaire refrigerator with a bad fan motor or defrost heater is frequently a sensible repair. One with a failed compressor or a leaking sealed system usually is not. Here is how we think it through with owners.
Repairs That Often Make Sense
- Evaporator fan motors, which wear out from running constantly.
- Defrost heaters, sensors and timers, which cause frost buildup and uneven cooling.
- Door gaskets that no longer seal, letting in warm humid air.
- Water inlet valves and fill tubes on units with ice makers or water dispensers.
- Control boards and thermostats, when the unit is otherwise sound.
Signs That Point Toward Replacement
- The compressor runs hot or will not start, and the freezer never reaches temperature.
- Refrigerant has leaked from the sealed system.
- The cabinet liner is cracked or the insulation is soaked, which shows as sweating on the outside walls.
- Several unrelated parts have failed in the same year.
No single sign settles it. A unit with a leaking door gasket might also have a tired compressor, so we test before we advise. Houston humidity speeds up rust at the bottom of the cabinet and on the condenser area, and a unit that has lived in a hot garage or enclosed utility room has usually worked harder than one in an air-conditioned kitchen.
How We Handle It
We diagnose first, then give you a written price before any work begins. If we think the repair is not worth the money, we will say that plainly, and you can decline it. Parts for older models are sometimes still available and sometimes not; we tell you which before you decide.
Repairs we do carry a 30-day workmanship warranty. Phone us or send the online form to get on the schedule. Once the visit is set, we give you a three-hour arrival window. Our refrigerator repair page lists the problems we handle.
