What EF means
On older Frigidaire electronic side-by-side refrigerators, such as the FGHS2655PF and FPHS2699PF, EF is reported when the control sees a failure of the evaporator fan. That fan moves cold air from the evaporator coil into the freezer and fresh food sections. When it stops or slows, the cold air stays near the coil, so the freezer may stay cold at the back while the fresh food side warms. You may hear the fan running loudly, or not at all, and frost can form on the back wall. These older units are still in many homes.
Common causes of EF
- The evaporator fan motor, and whether it spins freely
- Ice or frost blocking the fan blade
- The wiring between the fan and the control board
- The control board output that runs the fan
1. Make sure each door closes without catching and the gaskets are wiped down. 2. Listen near the back of the freezer for the fan when the door is closed. 3. Move food to a cooler if the fresh food side feels warm. 4. Do not remove interior panels or force the fan.
- The code does not show whether the fan motor, the ice around it, or the wiring is the cause.
- We check the fan for ice and free movement and test the motor and its connector.
- You receive a written price before any fan is replaced, and an older unit gets an honest opinion on value.
Other Refrigerator codes
What does EF mean on my refrigerator?
It means the control sees a failure of the evaporator fan, which moves cold air into the compartments. It is a fan or fan circuit problem. The food can warm if the fan stays off.
Can ice cause this code?
Sometimes. Frost can build up and block the fan, and the motor then struggles. We cannot tell from the code alone, so we look at the fan and the defrost system together.
Is an older side-by-side worth repairing?
Often it is, since a fan repair usually costs less than a new refrigerator. We quote the work in writing and tell you if the numbers do not make sense.
Still seeing EF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
