When a Frigidaire ice maker stops producing, work through five checks in order. Most are free, and they tell us a lot if you do need a visit.
Five Checks
- Freezer temperature. Ice makers need a properly cold freezer, around zero degrees. If the freezer is warm, fix that first.
- The on-off arm or switch. If the metal arm is raised, or the switch is off, the ice maker is paused.
- Water supply. Make sure the valve at the wall is open and the line is not kinked behind the refrigerator.
- Water filter. A clogged filter reduces flow and causes small, hollow or slow-forming cubes. Swap it for a new one or bypass it as a test.
- Frozen fill tube. A block of ice at the fill tube, at the back of the ice maker, stops water from reaching the mold.
If you find a block of ice, unplug the refrigerator and let it thaw rather than chipping at it. Wait a day after any fix before judging results, because the maker produces only a few batches at a time.
What Needs Parts or Testing
If all five check out, the cause can be the water inlet valve, the ice maker module, the heater that releases the cubes, or a thermistor that reports temperature. A module that is stuck mid-cycle looks the same as one that is dead. We test voltage at the valve and the module before replacing either.
Older Refrigerators
On an older Frigidaire, an ice maker failure is often a reasonable repair when the freezer itself still holds temperature. If the freezer is also struggling, we look at the whole system and say whether it is worth putting money into the ice maker.
If it is time to book, phone us or send the online form. You will get a three-hour arrival window from us. Learn more on our ice maker repair page.
