What E56 means
E56 on a Frigidaire front-load washer means the control measured high motor current. It appears on the horizontal-axis electronic control used in the 3.0 cu ft Frigidaire and Gallery washers and the Affinity 6000 and 7000 models. The motor is drawing more current than the control allows, so the washer stops the cycle to protect itself. Owners often see the drum stop partway through a wash or spin with E56 on the display. These are older washers that are still common in Houston.
Common causes of E56
- Drum binding or dragging against the tub
- Motor winding or connection drawing too much current
- Motor drive circuit on the control
- Overloaded or tangled wash load
1. Turn the washer off and remove the load. 2. Turn the drum by hand. It should move freely without grinding. 3. Check that nothing small is stuck between the drum and the tub. 4. Restart with a lighter load, and stop using the washer if E56 returns.
- High current can come from a dragging drum, the motor or the drive circuit, and the code alone cannot say which.
- We turn the drum, check the motor and its wiring, then test the drive circuit before a price is agreed.
- If the cost of a repair is close to the value of the washer, we tell you so.
Other Washer codes
Is E56 dangerous?
The washer stops the cycle to protect itself, which is what it should do. We do not recommend running it again and again, since high motor current can overheat the windings.
Could my load have caused E56?
A very heavy or tangled load can make the motor work too hard. If E56 returns with a small load, the cause is more likely in the drum, motor or drive.
Do you fix older Affinity washers?
Yes. They are still in many homes here. We give you a written price before work starts and a 30-day warranty on the repair. We test the motor first and tell you what we find.
Still seeing E56?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
