What E21 means
Frigidaire front-load washers built around the horizontal-axis electronic control show E21 when the water is not leaving the drum fast enough. The same listing covers the 3.0 cubic foot Frigidaire and Gallery washers from about 2004 to 2006, the Affinity 6000 and 7000 Series from 2006, and the 3.5 cubic foot Affinity from 2009 to 2012. On the 2004 washers it is signaled by two beeps. You may find water left in the drum, clothes that stay soaked, or a cycle that pauses before the spin. Washers of this age are common in Houston laundry rooms, and we service them regularly.
Common causes of E21
- A kinked or crushed drain hose
- A clog in the household drain or standpipe
- A drain pump that is clogged or not running
- The pump circuit on the control board
1. Straighten the drain hose. 2. Unclog the household drain. 3. Make sure the end of the drain hose is not pushed too deep into the standpipe. 4. Restart the cycle and watch whether the water leaves the drum. 5. Keep the lid or door shut until the water has left the drum.
- If E21 returns with a clear hose and drain, we do not know whether the pump, a blockage inside it or the control is involved.
- We check the pump for debris and test that it runs.
- We write the price down first, and if the washer is too old to justify the repair, we say so.
Other Washer codes
What does E21 mean?
It means the washer is not getting the water out quickly enough. The control gives up waiting and stops the cycle. That points to a drain restriction or a pump that is not moving the water.
Can I drain the washer myself?
Only if it is safe. Unplug the washer, put towels down and use the manual drain if your model has one. If you are unsure, call us.
Should I fix an older front-load washer that drains slowly?
Usually yes, when the problem is a hose, a clog or a pump. We find the cause, show the price in writing, and say so if the repair would cost more than the washer is worth.
Still seeing E21?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
