What F21 means
Frigidaire ranges with later electronic oven controls use F21, grouped with F20, to report that the oven control cannot communicate with the ESEC, the electronic surface element control. The two boards pass messages back and forth so the knobs can set the burners. When that stops, the display can show F21 and the surface elements may refuse to heat. The oven may keep working on its own.
Common causes of F21
- The harness between the oven control and the ESEC
- A loose or heat-damaged connector
- The surface element control board
- The oven control
1. Turn off all the elements and the oven. 2. Power the range down at the breaker or outlet for a short moment, then power it up. 3. Try a single surface element, then watch for F21. 4. Do not pull the range out to work on the wiring yourself.
- F21 and F20 belong to the same group, so we cannot tell them apart from the display alone.
- We test the harness first, then the board's supply and its output to the elements.
- A written price comes before any part is ordered.
Other Range codes
Do F21 and F20 mean the same thing?
They sit in the same group, both reporting lost communication between the oven control and the surface control. We read them the same way and test the link before replacing anything.
Can I still bake while F21 is showing?
Often the oven works while the surface elements do not, but that varies by model. We would rather check the link than have you rely on a half-working range.
Does a power reset help with F21?
It can clear a one-time glitch. If the code returns, the communication link still needs testing, and we start at the harness and connectors, since those are the most common place for a break.
Still seeing F21?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
