What F9 (old) means
On older Frigidaire ranges with the ES 200, 300 or 400 controls, such as the PLEF398 stem, a single F9 means the control found a problem with the motor door latch assembly. That is the motor that locks the oven door for self-clean and releases it afterward. These controls date from 2001 to 2003. You may see F9 after a clean cycle, a door that will not unlock, or a oven that will not start a bake. The newer F90 through F94 codes split this up in more detail.
Common causes of F9 (old)
- The latch motor on the oven door
- The switch that confirms the door is locked
- The wiring to the latch
- The control reading the latch
1. Cancel the cycle and let the oven cool. 2. Check that nothing, such as a rack or pan handle, holds the door open. 3. Interrupt power at the plug or breaker for a short while, then restore it. 4. Leave a locked door alone, and call us if it will not release.
- The single F9 does not say lock or unlock, so we watch the latch run through its movement.
- We test the motor and the switch separately.
- A written price comes first, and we speak plainly about whether an older range is worth repairing.

Where does F90 fit in compared with F9?
It is the older form. Later controls break it into F90 through F94, each naming a step. The cause is still the door latch, so we test the same parts.
Can I open a locked door with F9?
Please do not force it. Let the oven cool and call us, and we will release it safely without damaging the latch or the door.
Is an older range with this control worth fixing?
Often, since a latch is a modest repair. We tell you plainly beforehand if it is not, and you see a written price before we start.
Still seeing F9 (old)?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
