What F7 12 / 22 / 32 / 42 means
On Frigidaire freestanding electric ranges with the ESEC 10R surface element control, such as the PLEF398DC, F7 followed by 12, 22, 32 or 42 means one surface element's potentiometer is reading a value the control does not expect. The knob is neither open nor shorted, but its reading is wrong. The tens digit names the element, left front to right front. You may see that burner act erratically, or not respond at all.
Common causes of F7 12 / 22 / 32 / 42
- The potentiometer behind that knob, which can wear
- The wiring and connectors for that element
- The interface board input for that knob
1. Turn the elements off. 2. Note which burner was in use when the code appeared. 3. Power the range off at the plug or breaker for a short time, then restore it. 4. Leave the knob alone, and test the other burners one by one to see whether they respond.
- A wrong value can come from wear, a loose connector or the board input, so we test all three.
- We check that knob against the others on the range.
- You see a written price first, and hear it plainly if the age of the range makes the repair not worth it.
Other Range codes
What does a wrong value mean?
The knob's reading falls outside the range the control expects, but it is not fully open or shorted. We compare it to the other knobs on the range to see how far off it is.
Can I use the other burners with F7 12?
Often yes, but we would test them. We would not use the affected burner until we have looked at it, since the control cannot read its setting reliably.
Is it worth fixing an older range with F7 22?
Usually, since a knob or connector is a smaller repair. We tell you if a board makes it not worth it, and you see a written price before any work.
Still seeing F7 12 / 22 / 32 / 42?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
