If the freezer is hard-frozen but the upper compartment is warm, the cooling system is usually still running. The problem is normally that cold air is not being moved into the refrigerator side. That points to airflow, a frozen evaporator, or a part that controls the air, rather than a dead system.
What You Can Check Yourself
- Open the freezer and listen for the evaporator fan, usually behind a panel at the back. A fan that is silent, scraping or ticking is a clue.
- Check the air vents on the back wall of the refrigerator side. Packed food pushed against them blocks the flow.
- Check the back wall of the freezer for a thick coat of frost. Heavy frost on the rear panel often means the defrost system is not clearing ice.
- Confirm the temperature setting has not been bumped, especially if children or pets have access.
Why a Warm Shelf Does Not Name the Cause
A warm top section can come from an iced-over evaporator, a stuck air damper, a weak fan motor, or a temperature sensor reporting wrong numbers. These look the same from the kitchen. A burned-out defrost heater builds frost slowly, so the refrigerator may seem fine for days and then warm up. We confirm the cause by checking the heater, sensor and fan with a meter, not by guessing from the warm shelf.

Refrigerators ten to twenty years old are common in our calls, and kitchen heat and humidity make defrost problems more visible.
