What E-21 / E-22 means

E-21 and E-22 on Frigidaire convection microwaves, such as FPMO209KF, point to the oven thermal sensor. E-21 means the sensor circuit is open. E-22 means it is shorted. The control needs that sensor to know how hot the oven cavity is during convection and broil, so these modes may stop or not start. The handbook does not name which individual models carry these codes, so we confirm your exact model on the visit.

Common causes of E-21 / E-22

  • The oven thermal sensor and its plug
  • The wiring to the sensor
  • The control board input
  • Heat damage near the sensor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Let the microwave cool with the door open. 2. Check that vents are clear. 3. Try a plain microwave cycle. 4. If the code returns in oven modes, call us to schedule service. 5. Do not use convection or broil until it has been checked.

! Why to stop there
  • The code tells us open or shorted but not whether the sensor, wiring or board is responsible.
  • We test the sensor and its wiring before the board.
  • The price is quoted in writing, and we say plainly if the microwave is not worth fixing.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E-21 / E-22E-21 / E-22 questions
Which of E-21 and E-22 is the open circuit?

E-21 is an open thermal sensor circuit. E-22 is a shorted one. Both leave the control without a temperature reading. The oven thermal sensor is separate from the vapor sensor used for sensor cooking.

Will the microwave still heat food?

The plain microwave function may still work. The oven modes may not. A plain microwave cycle depends on neither of them. Do not run convection or broil again until it is checked, and tell us which mode was running when the code appeared.

Can you repair convection microwaves?

Yes. We repair them and give the price in writing before work. We test the sensor and wiring first. The sensor sits in the oven cavity, so heat and grease can affect it over time, and that is what we look at.
