What F3 means
F3 on the older Frigidaire and White-Westinghouse electric ranges with ES 100 to ES 400 oven controls means a defective sensor, the electronic oven control or the wiring between them. On older Frigidaire Professional and Gallery built-in wall ovens whose display shows only F1, F2, F3 or F9, F3 stands for the oven probe group, an open or shorted sensor, and also covers abusive operation, an opened safety thermostat or a stalled cooling fan. These older ovens are still in many homes.
Common causes of F3
- The oven temperature sensor
- Wiring running between the probe and the oven control
- The safety thermostat or cooling fan on wall ovens
- The electronic oven control
1. Press CLEAR. 2. Let the oven cool. 3. Check that the vents are clear. 4. Call us to book service if F3 comes back. 5. Do not use the oven for baking until it has been checked. 6. Note whether it still heats at all. 7. Keep the oven off if it will not hold a temperature.
- F3 names a sensor family and not one part, so we need to read the exact code.
- We test the sensor, wiring and control in that order.
- We tell you plainly when an older oven is not worth the repair.
Other Wall Oven codes
Is F3 always the sensor?
Not always. It can also be the wiring, the control, or on wall ovens a safety thermostat or fan. The wall ovens fold many sensor problems into F3.
Can I keep baking?
If the oven will not hold a temperature, no. Let us check it. The ES range controls give F3 a narrower meaning. Tell us which kind of oven you have, a built-in wall oven or a range, so we know which meaning applies.
Can an older range or wall oven be repaired?
Yes. We quote in writing first. In both cases we test the sensor and wiring before the control. Bring the model and serial number to the visit.
Still seeing F3?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
