What Df (forced defrost) means
The display on Frigidaire electronic-display refrigerators, including French-door, side-by-side and Iceman models such as the FGHB2866PF, can show Df while the refrigerator runs a forced defrost. Df is a service-mode indicator. A technician starts it by holding the fresh food plus and minus keys for about 6 seconds, which tells the control to defrost right away instead of waiting for its normal schedule. It is not a problem code. If you see Df after a visit, or after a child pressed the keys, the refrigerator is doing what it was told.
Common causes of Df (forced defrost)
- A forced defrost started by someone holding the keys
- A technician testing the defrost circuit
- A different code, since a capital F after a lowercase d means something else
1. Look at the letters closely: Df has a capital D, then a lowercase f. 2. Leave the doors closed and let the defrost finish on its own. 3. Expect the display to go back to the temperatures once the cycle ends. 4. If the display shows dF instead, treat it as a different code.
- If Df stays on for hours, we do not know whether the defrost cycle is stuck or a key is being held.
- We check the keypad and watch the defrost cycle end.
- If anything needs replacing, you will see the price in writing first.

Is Df a problem?
No. Df shows that a forced defrost is running, and it is a service indicator. It is only a concern if it stays on far longer than a defrost normally takes.
How do I tell Df from dF?
Df has a capital D, then a lowercase f, and it shows while a forced defrost runs. dF reports no defrost circuit, which is a real problem. The order of the letters is the clue.
Can I start a forced defrost myself?
That is a service procedure, so we leave it to technicians. If you think the freezer needs defrosting, call us and we will look into why frost has built up.
Still unsure about Df (forced defrost)?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
