Frigidaire Dehumidifier Running But Not Collecting Water

A dehumidifier that runs all day without filling the bucket may have a dirty coil, low room humidity or a sensor problem. Here is how to sort out which one.

A Frigidaire dehumidifier that runs but collects little or no water is not always broken. First rule out the room, then the filter and coil, then the parts we would test.

Rule Out the Room

  • Is the humidity actually high? A small humidity meter from a hardware store tells you. If the room is already at or below your setting, the unit will not run its compressor.
  • Is it cold? Dehumidifiers collect much less water in cool rooms, and the coil can frost over.
  • Are doors and windows open? Constant outside air in a Gulf Coast summer overwhelms a small unit.

Check the Unit

  1. Wash the air filter and let it dry.
  2. Look at the coil behind the filter. Dust turns to a mat that blocks air.
  3. Check that the bucket is seated fully. A bucket that is a little off can keep the float switch from closing.
  4. Feel the exhaust air. It should be warm. If the fan runs but the air is cool, the compressor may not be running.

What We Look At Next

If the fan runs and the air feels warm but little water appears, we check for a frozen coil, a failed humidity sensor, a weak start capacitor or a refrigerant leak. A unit that blows air and never starts the compressor behaves differently from one that starts and stops every few minutes. These signs overlap, so we test before replacing anything.

Many dehumidifiers we see are several years old and have run through every wet season. A leaking sealed system on a small unit is often not worth repairing, and we say that up front. A frozen coil, dirty fan or bad sensor often is.
