What SY EF means
SY EF on a Frigidaire Gallery or Professional French-door bottom-freezer refrigerator with an electronic display, and on electronic side-by-side models, reports a failure in the evaporator fan circuit. The evaporator fan pulls cold air from the coil and sends it to the freezer and fresh food sections. When it fails, the cold stays at the coil, so the fresh food side may warm while frost builds on the freezer wall. You may hear no fan, a noisy fan, or see SY EF with food that does not stay as cold as before.
Common causes of SY EF
- The evaporator fan motor and whether it turns freely
- Frost or ice around the fan blade
- The wiring and connector between the fan and the control
- The control board output that runs the fan
1. Check that the doors close and the seals are clean. 2. Listen at the back of the freezer for the fan with the door closed. 3. Move food to a cooler if the fresh food side feels warm. 4. Do not remove interior panels.
- The code does not show whether the motor, ice or wiring caused the failure.
- We check the fan and its blade, then test the motor and the connector.
- We put the price in writing first, and our repairs are covered for 30 days.
Other Refrigerator codes
What does the evaporator fan do?
It moves air across the cold coil and into the compartments. Without it, the freezer can stay cold near the coil while the rest of the refrigerator warms.
Is SY EF the same as EF?
It is the same fan problem, shown in the format of the newer display. Older side-by-sides show EF alone. The repair is similar, but we check each model on its own.
Is it worth fixing an older Gallery refrigerator?
Often it is, since a fan repair usually costs less than a new unit. We give you the price in writing and tell you if the repair does not make sense.
Still seeing SY EF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
