What 3 (in freezer window) means
A 3 in the freezer temperature window on an older Frigidaire electronic side-by-side refrigerator, such as the FGHS2655PF or FPHS2699PF, means the freezer thermistor reads as shorted. This is the opposite of an open sensor: the circuit looks closed where it should have resistance, so the control reads a temperature it cannot trust. You may see the 3 instead of the setpoint, a freezer that runs too cold or too warm, or a compressor that seems to run all the time or hardly at all. The numeric display is how this older control reports the problem.
Common causes of 3 (in freezer window)
- The freezer thermistor, which may be shorted
- Moisture or damage at the sensor connector
- Whether the control board reads the sensor correctly
1. Make sure the freezer door is fully closed and the gasket is clean. 2. Keep the doors shut as much as possible so the food stays cold. 3. Move food to another freezer if the compartment feels warm. 4. Do not remove interior panels or pull wires.
- We cannot tell from the code alone whether the sensor, its wire or the control board needs attention.
- We measure the sensor and the circuit, then check the connector for moisture or damage.
- Nothing gets replaced until you have seen the price on paper, and we will say so if a repair is not a good value for an older unit.
Other Refrigerator codes
How is a 3 different from a 2?
A 2 means the sensor circuit reads open and a 3 means it reads shorted. Both mean the control cannot trust the freezer temperature. We test the circuit to find which part needs attention.
Can I keep using the freezer?
If the freezer is holding temperature, you can usually keep using it for a short time. Watch the food closely, and if anything thaws or the compartment warms, move it to another freezer and schedule service.
Do you work on older side-by-sides?
We do. These refrigerators are still common around Houston. We test the sensor circuit, put the price in writing, and tell you if the repair is not worth it.
Still seeing 3 (in freezer window)?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
